Mom-in-law made this year again one of her famous fruit birthday cakes (berry cake, mainly strawberry, yummy!).

We celebrated together with the couple whose wife is coming from Taiwan(they live in our town, too) and with whom i can talk Chinese and celebrate a few of our Chinese festivals in Germany.

Her husband did play a few birthday songs for us on his accordion for our amusement and Timmy always likes to dance to his songs.

As we walked through the culture festival on Saturday our eyes and especially the hands of our son Tim caught the following funny animals who have been on sale by a DIY-artist. They are all made from wood and the main core, the piggy bank or coin box, is an empty coconut.

We went today again to our yearly culture festival (called "Kulturufer") which gets celebrated in Friedrichshafen at the Lake of Constanze. There you can listen and watch to all kind of musicians, artists, bands and clowns. But today there was a lady acting as a human tree and not only for half an hour (much sunshine and quite hot while body fully covered with clothes).

We saw her at the beginning of our tour around 4:45 pm, when we left around 7:15 pm she still stood there and greeted everyone who donated some money in her basket with flying kisses.

A strong case for “baby number sense”

Were the babies really responding to the change in numerosity? It certainly seems so.

Babies reacted similarly when presented with pairs of small numbers (2 vs 3) and distant, large numbers (4 vs 12).

And researchers controlled for several, non-numerical variables that could have influenced babies—like the total surface area of the objects, the average area devoted to each object, the total luminance of each image, and the total area occupied by each group of objects.

So babies weren’t simply attending to the continuous extent of “stuff” in each image.

In fact, other experiments suggest that babies pay more attention to change in number than they do to changes in continuous extent or surface area (Cordes and Brannon 2008).

Nor is it all “in the eye.” If babies’ feats of numerical discrimination were confined to visible objects, we might suspect that the ability is domain specific—a specialization of the visual system rather than a more general conceptual ability. But babies aren’t one-trick ponies. In addition to distinguishing visual arrays, babies can also detect differences in the number of sounds and in the number of actions (Lipton and Spelke 2003; Wood and Spelke 2005).

Babies can even understand ordinality—the idea that numbers can be arranged in order of magnitude. When 11-month old babies were presented with sequences of numerosities, they could discriminate between sequences that increased and sequences that decreased (Brannon 2002).

Of course, this doesn’t mean that babies can distinguish any two numbers. There are limits. For instance:

Six-month old babies have a hard time distinguishing two quantities if the ratio between them is less than 2:1. In other words, they can handle 8 vs. 16, but fail to distinguish 8 vs. 12 (Xu and Arriaga 2007; Lipton and Spelke 2003)
Nine- and 10-month olds can make finer distinctions (8 vs. 12). But even these older babies don’t seem to discriminate between 8 and 10 (Xu and Arriaga 2004; Lipton and Spelke 2003)
Babies don’t distinguish between increasing and decreasing sequences of numbers until the approach the end of their first year. When Elizabeth Brannon tested 9-month old babies, they failed the test (Brannon 2002)

Nevertheless, the results are pretty impressive. When babies look at a set of objects, they don’t just see a “bunch.” Babies have an approximate sense of number.

New experimental research reveals a fascinating new world of baby cognition, one in which babies can

recognize the approximate difference between two numbers
keep precise track of small numbers, and
do simple subtraction and addition problems.

Moreover, when babies perform these feats they activate the same parts of the brain that are associated with mathematical thinking in adults.

What babies know about numerosity
Psychologists define “numerosity” as the number of things in a set.
Although we can get a precise measure of numerosity by counting, it’s possible to appreciate numerosity in a more approximate way.
For instance, if I ask you to glance in a crowded elevator and estimate how many people are there, you can probably make a pretty good guess.
Glance inside two elevators, and you’ll also be pretty good at guessing which one has more people in it.
All without counting.
It turns out that adult humans aren’t the only creatures who can pull this off. A variety of non-verbal creatures—including monkeys, rats, and human infants—can detect the approximate difference in magnitude between two sets (Dehaene 1999).
Show them two displays—one featuring 8 items and the other only 4 items—and they will respond differently depending on what they see.
And the difference is observable in the brain.
When 3-month old infants were shown a series of displays depicting different quantities of objects, the electrical activity of their brains changed in response (Izard et al 2008).
For example, babies were presented with a continuous stream of images, each depicting 4 objects. From image to image, the objects were arranged differently. But the total number of objects remained the same.
Infants subjected to this program showed signs of boredom.
But their brain activity (as measured by event-related potentials, or ERPs) would perk up if they were next presented with an image showing 8 objects.
What’s more, the part of the brain that was activated was the same region that lights up when adults process information about numbers (Izard et al 2008).

Now it has been more than two years since i came to meet my girlfriend in May 2008 in Kuala Lumpur and we have been grown in the last two years to a small family with our Baby-Boy Tim. In the next two or three weeks we will move to Germany and settle there for another new start of our life.

As always when you have to move there are items which you can't take along with you.

This video contains the most important issues persons are facing who "suffer" from the EEC syndrome (Ectrodactyly-ectodermal-dysplasia-cleft-Syndrome). The video is presented by the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias (NFED).

At the moment we don't see such severe problems like many of these kids in the video but it will take another year to fully recognize the different problems which he might face in the future:

Hair growth
missing teeth (at the moment it could be that two teeth are missing as they didn't grow yet but should have been there already)
growth (at the lower level for its age group)

The problems that we are facing is less his hands and fingers as most persons don't recognize them because you usually look in the face of a baby ;)

It will be more about finding the right doctors and get an appropriate treatment for all the "problems" that might come. And the time it will take to heal his wounds as he is an active boy who likes to crawl, walk and clap his hands.

Information about the EEC-Syndrome of our son

We wanted to share some information about the EEC-Syndrome (Ectrodactyly-ectodermal-dysplasia-cleft-Syndrome) of our son as there is a high possibility that he might have this kind of genetic disorder.

I bet you know some persons who "suffer" from the same condition. Mainly these are the persons with cleft lips/palate which gets to be operated while they are babies or young toddlers.

Timmy doesn't have the cleft lips but he has only nine fingers and they are split in the middle (imagine a lobster's claw).

As we will go back to Germany in a few weeks, we have to make several decisions on who shall perform the surgeries and if we should perform the surgeries as there are always risks for such small babies.

The information about the surgery which we got from the Hospital in Kuala Lumpur looks like this:

several hours for each operation
at least 2 or 3 operations for each hand
healing process takes several weeks

We will publish tomorrow a video from one of the biggest EEC-Syndrome self-help groups in America.

There you can see how the kids hands, mouth and feet will look like before the surgery, after the surgery and during the healing process.

(Just saw that Jessica Simpson seems to be an ambassador for Kids with cleft lips and palate. She is supporting "Operation Smile" a foundation who provides free surgeries for those kids.)

3-Day-Fever: The 1st severe viral infection for our son

The scientific name of the three day fever is Roseola Infantum or exanthema subitum. 3-day fever is a mild viral illness of sudden onset and short duration that most commonly affects young children, generally under two years old.

The early sign of 3 day fever (roseola infantum) is a sudden high fever (can go up to 40 degrees) and that normally lasts for three to five days. When the fever disappears, the rash will appear. This usually begins on the trunk, spreading to the legs and neck. The rash may last for few days.

There is no specific treatment or vaccines for Three Day Fever (roseola infantum), it usually goes away without any treatment.

These few days, Timmy was infected by Roseola Infantum, he had suddenly a very high fever after we came back shopping from midnight 12/04/2010 on. During the fever time, it wasn't easy to make him sleep and he cried very often. We used wet and cold wash cloth to mop his chest, back, armpit, legs and head, in order to reduce his high temperature. We did not know what caused his high fever, there was totally no sign of it (or perhaps we did not notice it).

Thanks to Monica from Turn-u-off for her tip to use ice packs (we haven't been sure if this would be too cold for him but it was definitely good for reducing his fever!)

About 2 days later (around 15/04), the fever was gone, and the rash showed up the first time on his head. Initially we thought it's some bites from ants (at that time we did not know about Roseola Infantum). But the rashes showed up more and more. It covered the neck, slowly to the chest and back, finally his arms and legs were covered. Honestly, it's scary to see that, and for sure it is the first time we experience this. These rashes are totally different which Timmy had several weeks ago.

Then I immediately checked from the internet about the symptoms, and finally found out it must be the 3 day fever. Then i was relieved to read that after the rashes, Timmy will be recovered. I checked the english information for my hubby to know about this sickness (my information was in chinese). After reading it, both of us felt no more so worried.

12/4 - Timmy was already inactive in the mall.

13/4 - Having high fever (up to 40 Celsius).

16/4 - Fever was gone, rashes appeared, started from head & neck.

16/4 - During the night, rashes getting more and more on the body (not itchy, no scratching!)

17/4 - No more like red dots, just covered with red rash.

18/04 - After getting again nearly 39 Celsius fever (during the night) the rash is nearly invisible since the afternoon (no pic yet)

This is the new food combination that i made for Timmy, he loves it and finished all of it :-)

Easy homemade baby food recipe:

Ingredients:
mini potatoes
broccoli florets
egg yolk

Instructions:
1. Steam the potatoes and broccoli until soft.
2. Boil the egg, and take out the egg yolk.
3. Mash the potatoes, broccoli and egg yolk.
4. Add a bit water.

Voila, now the food is ready for your adorable baby. Enjoy!

On 23rd March 2010 was the big day for Timmy as we headed to the Senai Airport to take our flight back to Kuala Lumpur. It's always difficult to travel with kids under 2 years in the airplane. They don't know yet how to react when you get the pressure in the ears.

The best tips when you fly the first time with your baby

Take a pacifier with you and put it in the mouth of your baby when the airplane starts to take off (and lands) and look that your baby is sucking it until you don't feel anymore pressure in your own ears
Give your baby something to eat, so that it chews during the take off and landing
Take a bottle with fluids (water, fruit juice, milk) and feed your baby, so that it always sucks the fluids during the time when the airplane takes off or lands

We tried both methods and only the last one worked for some minutes. After we landed in Kuala Lumpur, Timmy hit with his hands on his heads. This meant for us that it wasn't completely successful and he might have been dizzy or got a headache. For luck he didn't have any other severe symptoms because after one day with a lot of sleeping he felt already better and didn't show anymore signs of hitting with his hands on his head.

Timmy loves the flash cards again!

I have stopped showing flash cards to Timmy for a while.

Recently i start showing him the flash cards again.

He seems to be very excited to look at the flash cards.

After i have shown one group of cards, he wants to see more.

Afterwards, i show two cards in front of him,

and request him to pick up a card.

Yeah! He picks up the right one.

Then i request him to pick up another one,

he does pick up the correct one as well.

This does not really surprise me,

because normally Timmy picks up the correct card when he is in good mood.

For sure, we clap our hands loudly and give him a hug and kiss.

And say he is doing great :-)

I am happy that Timmy loves the flash cards again.

There was a period Timmy did not like at all.

And now the hard time was away :-)

Learn to be independent

What an interesting day for Timmy!

Today we went to make the passports for me (Lupin) and Timmy. Like you can imagine from a government office, the process of getting things done there can take time. Especially when some things are missing as we didn't know that they want instead of the Identity card his birth certificate (which meant we had to drive home again to collect it) as a proof of his existence. After we left the first time at 8:30 am we took a quick break at home around 10:30 am and left again short after 11 am. Usually the sleeping time for Timmy.

Luckily i wore the comfortable baby sling, otherwise Timmy would be already very fussy. Back in the government office we still had to wait until 12:30 pm (we took the number already at 10 am) to submit the two forms for the passport. Luckily they split the submission for passports in two groups - one group is for any adult and our group was for parents with kids and retired persons (age older than 55 or 60).

This was a very good experience for Timmy as he has seldom contact with other babies/kids in his age. As soon as he saw other kids running around or being on the arms of their parents, he looked at them. Observed them at first what they are doing and what their reactions are and was in the mood to socialize with them. His first step is now usually that he waved his hands (which probably means hi or goodbye). If he was in reach of the babies, he tried to touch their arms, hands or bodies, most of the time they shacked hands ;)

We felt that he enjoyed being around these kids as for now we don't have the opportunity in Kuala Lumpur to find a group with the similar age.

After the submission of the documents we had to wait again because they made their lunch break from 1 - 2 pm. Another 1 1/2 hour went by until we could leave the -with hot and stuffy air filled - immigration office.

The 2-years-passports cost RM100 for each person. Martin said it's quite expensive compared to a German passport which would be valid for 10 years (for adults, babies a few years less).

After we took our lunch, Timmy had his first hair cut. Surprisingly, Timmy was very "obedient", he even did not move his head and body when the hairdresser cut his hair. Usually when you touch his head with your hand or put something on his head, he would immediately try to grab your hand or the item on his head. Or when we feed him in the high chair, he looses often his patience after a few minutes and tries to stand up and turns around in the high chair. That's why we thought Timmy would get impatient, scared or even cry at the hair dresser (like the kid on the picture *lol). We guess now it was because the hair dresser used the electric hair cutter instead of the scissor that gave him a new experience & feeling on his head (when it's vibrating). Timmy really gave us lots of surprises in the last few days!

Asthma: BPA and Folate could be the reason!

A new study shows that mice who are pregnant and have been exposed to BPA -a common controversial chemical which hides in plastic bottles and aluminium lining of food and beverage cans- are more likely to let their babies develop Asthma in their future life!

A second study suggests that the intake of Folate during pregnancy might lead to Asthma from the age of 3 in case you took too much. As Folate is usually important during pregnancy because it can prevent neural tube defects it seems that it's the same with every vitamin supplement - Taking more doesn't necessarily mean it's better for the health!

The American Academy of Pediatrics released a new policy statement on choking as choking is the leading cause of injury and death amongst children, most likely if they are 4 years and younger!

Facts about choking

Food, coins and toys cause the most choking related incidents
In the USA every five days a child will die from choking on food
Only toys are regulated to have warning labels because of choking hazards - no regulations for high risk foods
Many "kid friendly" foods like pop corn, grapes and nuts are potentially dangerous!
Greatest risk comes from Hot dogs as they can block exactly the airway of little children

Preventing your kids from choking

Do not give children younger than 4 any round, firm foods unless they have been cut into very small pieces.
Cut hot dogs lengthwise and cut grapes into quarters. This changes the dangerous round shape that can block a young child’s throat.
Do not give toddlers other high risk foods, such as hard candy, nuts, seeds and raw carrots.
Never let small children run, play or lie down while eating.
Keep coins and other small items out of reach of young children at all times.
Carefully read warning labels on toys before giving them to young children.
To check if a part of a toy is too small, use a small parts test device, which is available at many toy stores.
Additionally, parents and caregivers should learn first aid for choking and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the event a choking episode occurs.

A new study claims that drinking sugary soft drinks 2 times and more a week don't only lead to dental problems but can even lead to pancreas cancer!

The risk of regular soda drinkers is 87 % higher than persons who drinks instead fruit juices.
The theory behind this new finding is that sugar may give the fuel for the growth of cancerous cells in the usually insulin producing pancreas.

Autism risk: Age of mother & father could make a difference

I guess everyone knows about the risks of a late-in-life pregnancy. Now with a new study published it gets more and more into a direction that

the age of mother and father and
even a certain age difference between mother and father

can lead to risk not only the Down-Syndrome in a newborn child but also an autistic child in the future.

The older a mother gives birth to a baby, the more likely it will develop autistic characters. A 40 year old mother has a 50% greater chance of having an autistic child than a mother in the age of 25 - 29 years.

The risk of fathers which are older than 40 years is only significant higher if the mother is younger than 30 years. The risk is twice as likely that the kid will develop autism signs than if the father would be 25 - 29 years young.

A Austrian study found that if men sharing a bed with a bed mate it affects their mental ability the next day.

Although the men reported they had slept better with a partner, they fared worse in the tests, with their results suggesting they actually had more disturbed sleep.

Both sexes had a more disturbed night's sleep when they shared their bed.

But women apparently managed to sleep more deeply when they did eventually drop off, since they claimed to be more refreshed than their sleep time suggested.

Their stress hormone levels and mental scores did not suffer to the same extent as the men.

But the women still reported that they had the best sleep when they were alone in bed.

Bed sharing also affected dream recall. Women remembered more after sleeping alone and men recalled best after sex.

"Historically, we have never been meant to sleep in the same bed as each other. It is a bizarre thing to do.

"Sleep is the most selfish thing you can do and it's vital for good physical and mental health.

"Sharing the bed space with someone who is making noises and who you have to fight with for the duvet is not sensible.

I came across this trailer while scanning through one of my twitter lists last week.

This visually stunning new movie simultaneously follows four babies around the world - from first breath to first steps. From Mongolia to Namibia to San Francisco to Tokyo, Babies joyfully captures on film the earliest stages of the journey of humanity that are at once unique and universal to us all.

See the world of the babies and their development from another ankle as we never could experience how babies around the desert are raised up.

The documentary shall be released in April 2010, hopefully some cinemas will show this movie and not only Hollywood blockbusters...

Researchers from the School of Medicine at University of California, San Diego, found a common bacterial species, known as Staphylococci, blocked a vital step in a cascade of events that led to inflammation which can be found in mud :)

Normal bacteria living on the skin trigger a pathway that helps prevent inflammation when we get hurt, the US team discovered.

A spokeswoman for Allergy UK said there was a growing body of evidence that exposure to germs was a good thing.

"Rates of allergy have tripled in the UK in the last decade. One in three people now has some kind of allergy.

"Some of this might be that people are better informed. But a lot of it is genetic as well as down to our environment," she said.

Smack your kids to success - a study suggests!?

A new study who researched the effects of smacking kids showed surprising results but it depends at which ages the kids have been smacked.

The study "recommends" that smacking your kids between 2 and 6 years leads to more successful youngsters and adults in the long run.

In comparison with kids who haven't been beaten or kids who have been beaten beyond the age of 12 years the previous mentioned group of kids had advantages in academic rank, volunteer work, college aspirations, hope for the future, and confidence in their ability to earn a living when they grow up.

The study reviewed 2.600 persons of whom 25% never had been smacked. The 179 teenagers were asked when they got their last smack and how often they were smacked as child.

Timmy started developing his own baby language from 11 Dec 09. The first word he said was " Ada...ada...", haha... does he mean papa?? Ok...i am not sure, seems everything for him is "ada..ada" ;-) We are happy that he has started his baby language....

Besides "ada...ada.." , sure there are some more words...which i could not identify ;-). Timmy's baby language sounds really cute and nice. He always makes us laugh. It's kind of pleasure to hear him talking to himself or to us :-)

I look forward to the day that he can say "mama" and the day that he can express himself.

Finally we are back ;-) It's always more comfortable to sleep on our own bed :-) And poor Timmy, he had many mosquitoes bites on the last days staying at my grandma's house. Seems like his blood is sweeter *LOL* It's heartbreaking to see he had so many swollen red dots on his face and hands :-(

Somehow, I had a great time together with my grandmas. My grandmas were happy to see Timmy. And especially my grandma from Bukit Mertajam was no more that lonely when we visited her.

Saying goodbye is always difficult. I hope we still can meet each other in January when my brother is back from Australia.

Luckily, there is internet connection at my grandma's house, so that we can update our blogs during our trip.

Well...this is not really a happy journey for me as i do not like the way my mother treated me in front of people as a mother. However, i do not want to talk much or argue anything as they are not a breastfeeding supporter. But, what i do not understand is why my mom always wants to make me feel bad in front of others! This made me sad and angry.......well..perhaps i should really get used to it as she was already like this when i was small. But, i am still upset :-(

Fortunately, my grandmas are not like her. They are more on my side :-) I am happy to see them and hopefully one of my grandma will be staying together with my family in JB from next year on :-)

Timmy was happy to see his grate grandmas too ;-) Here is a photo together with one of my grandma :-)

Visiting our relatives

Hello visitors and readers of All about babies and kids,

like you may know already we are already in holidays (join our Holiday-Contest to win prizes worth over 200$ + 25.000+ EC, good luck).

We are visiting the relatives in Penang and Kedah in Malaysia. It's our first visit together with our baby boy Timmy!!

My grandma and my aunties are longing to see Timmy since we've mailed them the pictures of our cute Timmy XD. Well, i do hope they don't focus too much on the Timmy's hands and nine fingers. I know they'll do and give us several advises :( But what ever, I don't know how they will react when they see him the first time as they don't know yet, how it really looks like.

I look forward visiting them and i hope there won't be too much critics on me as mother. You have to know, Chinese are sometimes very superstitious, especially in cases when your kid isn't developed "normal".
They might blame me on causing this appearance to Timmy, for example by using a scissor and cutting things during pregnancy (as if this would cut his finger in womb??) *LOL*
Frankly, i do hate to hear these kind of talking! But i know, it will happen... again like on the first day of his birth :( ARGH!!

However, i think it will still be a happy journey because nevertheless Timmy is really cute and yeah... clever ... XD

Ok, hopefully we can update the blog if there is an internet connection in my grandma's house.

Baby milestone : 7 & 8 months

When Timmy was 7-month-old, he could stand while holding on something, and now, he likes to stand up but he still needs to hold something to support himself up ;-) He also started cruising, his physical development amazed us!

He also liked to play pee-ka-poo with us, he always smiled or laughed happily when we played this games together. Oh ya, he also would give you five if you would play the game of "give me five"...haha......he is really such an adorable baby!!!

So far, Timmy does not experience stranger anxiety. What he does is always observe first, and then he will give the strangers his sweet smile if they play with him.

For the age of 8 months, Timmy already started showing us his wants by crying!! If we take away his "toy", then he will cry or perhaps he is complaining about we interrupt him...hahaa.... Ok, sometimes we made this purposely, just only wanted to see his cute reaction XD.

We look forward to hear "mama" or "papa" from him, so far, i only can hear "mama" from him when he is crying...but my hubby said i think too much....XD...... However, at this age, he does very well during our flash card session. He always shows me the correct answers....hehe...i know i should not test him...but there is always temptation to test :-(

Oh ya, he also tries to pick up my hair which i dropped on the bed with thumb-finger pincer grasp. However, he still needs a lot of practices.

These are some of the members of a Carnival group. They walk with several thousand different persons in the streets during the Carnival season.

It starts every year on 11th November at 11:11 am. Usually on this day it's just a meeting of the group members in their club house and some pictures for the media.

The real season starts in January and lasts usually until February on the day when the Christian start their fasting period.

Gymboree Play & Learn Review (Tropicana)

Today i would like to make a review about the Gymboree trial class that we sent Timmy to. It's already about a month ago, but i could not find a time to make the review.

We were disappointed when we were told Timmy was the only baby in this level (Play and learn - Level II, 6 - 10 month young babies). One of our purpose was hoping that Timmy could interact with other babies. Well...the advantage of being the only baby in this class is that the teacher would pay more attention on Timmy ;-)

Basically, Timmy enjoyed the activities, he showed his curiosity all the time. And frankly, he was doing very well. The teacher said so, too :-) In my eyes, some of the activities seems difficult for Timmy to complete, but i was surprised that he could actually complete them (except one, crawling down a slide) for his first time!

The activities are finished within 45 minutes, it's really a rush!!! Once Timmy had completed one, he were asked to complete another activity immediately! It's always rushing here and there (can't imagine what it will be like in the other groups with several kids). Tired for us too ;-) haha...... From my observation, i believe Timmy wanted more time for himself to explore all the used equipments.

Basically, we were quite ok with the class since Timmy enjoyed the activities and interacted well with the teacher.

I hope there will be some more babies signing up for this class. I really hope Timmy can make some new friends soon ;-)
